Why is the concept of "truth" unpopular today...
... and more reasons why some Christians voted for Trump
“Truth” is a concept that has gone out of fashion. These days it is often used to mean the same as “opinion” - for example when someone says, “that’s true for you, but it’s not true for me”. This is a rejection of the traditional understanding that there is an objective truth that can be found, independent of any human mind that might believe it. Is this new understanding of “truth” one of the reasons why faith has declined in recent decades?
I think that in order to have faith in Christ, it is necessary to believe in truth. So recently I explored the philosophical movement that started to question and reject “truth,” known as postmodernism - and reflected on why examining this development might be important for believers in today’s world.
I also reported on the thoughts of two pro-Trump Christians who had explained their reasons for their vote for Premier Unbelievable, based on two of discussions on their show. One was a fairly balanced supporter, while the other, Eric Metaxas, seemed to be a true believer - and gets pretty irate at the negative slant of the British interviewer’s questions. I’ve already highlighted in this newsletter a broader piece on why Christians voted for Trump that was drawn from a wider sample. I’m not very encouraged by Trump’s picks so far, and no doubt Christians will be blamed if it all goes horribly wrong when he is in office. I hope both political parties - on both sides of the Atlantic - can improve and become better options for voters, and quickly.
